Walter Verses the Deer

Even on the weekends, Doc and I get up bright and early to start the day. Last Saturday, we were up just as the sun was peeking out over the horizon and when I went out for my morning constitutional, I was interrupted by two four-legged creatures like I have never seen.

I was busy over in the corner of the yard when I noticed Doc, still in her pajamas whispering something quietly as she moved to the edge of the porch. She then pulled out her phone and started taking pictures. Well, that piqued my interest and I turned to see what she was looking at. Coming into the back acre and moving closer to us, were two creatures that Doc told me were baby deer. She said they were still young even though their spots were gone.

At first, I had no idea what to do, so I just went over to the fence and watched them. As they came closer, I did what any respectable dog would do to protect their pack leader and property, I put my front paws on the top of the fence and I growled and barked. Well, that got their attention and they started moving away from us. I have to say I was quite proud of myself for protecting us from those creatures.

When I went back to the porch to come in the house, Doc told me I didn’t have to chase baby deer away because they are harmless. I was perplexed and said to Doc, “I am confused about what my job is around here, do you want me to chase off predators or not?” I reminded her I had never seen anything like that before because I am only 11 months old and haven’t encountered everything yet. I then saw her face soften and she told me she was sorry, she forgets I am seeing everything in the world for the first time.

After we got into the house Doc said that it’s nice to be reminded that everything is new to me. “It’s a blessing to be able to see the world through your eyes with all the wonder and curiosity that a puppy still has.”  Doc said that as you get older it’s easy to rush past the magic and get stuck in the rut of everyday routines. The world is full of boundless possibilities that I need to be reminded of from time to time.. As she smiled and patted me on the head she said, “I am so lucky to have such a sweet puppy that reminds me of that.
