Helping Children to Heal
Last night, Doc and I went to our local public library to participate in a program to help children and teens reduce their stress.. Along with three other nice therapy dogs, we were available in the conference room, right next to the children’s section of the library, where the children could have easy access to us. As adults, I think we sometimes forget that children have stress as well and they need healthy outlets to manage it. Sitting with some nice dogs is one way to reduce stress.
Doc says that she is still amazed at what people will tell you when a nice dog is present. The children and teenagers that came to visit, told us many things while they were spending time petting and loving on me. I am a very good listener and keep everyone’s secrets, so what you say, stays safe with me.
Doc says it is so important for people to learn to manage their stress in healthy ways and adults can be great role models to children about how that is done. It’s so important to take time for yourself. I know at the end of our long work day, Doc and I like to go outside, take walks, and sometimes just chill on the back porch and watch the squirls and bunnies play, that always calms our nerves. And of course, sometimes it’s just good to talk to someone about what is bothering you.
Sadly, according to a 2022 meta analysis of 29 studies reported in JAMA Pediatrics , 20.5% of youth worldwide, struggle with some type of anxiety disorder, and it continues to rise. There are multiple causes for this, like children feeling academic pressure, too much time on social medica that puts them at risk of being bullied or exploited, and problems at home, just to name a few. Remember to ask the children in your life if they are ok, or need to talk. It’s also good to get off of social media, turn off the tv and spend time doing something fun, Or you could, find a nice dog to cuddle with, I am always available if you need me.
